How to be safe on the roads

Get a perspective on road safety from stories of people living with disabilities as well as that of council and police.

Kym Snow

As Road Safety Officer at Shoalhaven City Council, Kym Snow gives her tips on safety on the road most especially for bicycle riders as many of Flagstaff’s employees with disabilities take a bike to and from work.

LAURINDA

Laurinda Martin works for Paper to Paper, Fine Foods and the Corporate office in rotation and she also checks all braille printed documents for Print Mail and Digital. Laurinda started gradually losing her sight at 7 due to retinitis pigmentosa and rod cone dystrophy.

CAMERON

Not all disabilities are visible. Hidden disabilities are no less challenging to live with and Cameron tells his story about living with Schizophrenia, epilepsy and autism. Mostly unsupervised as a child, he fell from a shipping container which caused his brain injury.

INSPECTOR AARON

Youth and Crime Prevention Duty Officer of the Lake Illawarra Police District, Inspector Aaron, gives us an insight of what the current road safety trends are in the area to understand what the impacts are when people are involved in accidents.

AARON

Aaron Cannon drives forklifts for moving recycled materials within the plant with a great deal of skill. The Learner Driver program has given him the confidence to perform his job.

DANIELLE

Danielle works for Flagstaff’s Print, Mail and Digital division as a receptionist. She just had her car rendered a write off due to an impatient driver which caused her quite a lot of trouble getting to and from work until she got a replacement.

INSPECTOR CARLO

Inspector Carlo from the Lake Illawarra Police District tells us all about the impact of drinking or using drugs whilst driving. The use of substances, be they illegal or legal, which impair a driver’s ability to make correct judgements on the road is prohibited and can attract severe penalties.

SERGEANT NICK

Sergeant Nick is a member of the highway patrol. He talks about keeping a safe distance, and not being distracted, which means not drinking or eating whilst driving and that doesn’t mean just alcohol, he means all kinds of drinks even though it is not illegal it can cause distraction.
