WHAT TO DO WHEN
YOU ARE INVOLVED IN AN ACCIDENT

STOP

  • Stop
  • Turn off the ignition
  • Turn on your hazard lights
  • Give assistance if needed
  • Call 000 if anyone is injured
  • Clear road debris if safe to do so
  • Move to a safe parking spot if you can.  If you can’t, put a witches hat or emergency warning device to let other drivers know there is a hazard ahead (See Be Prepared below)

EXCHANGE DETAILS

  • Take note of accident details
  • Take photos and videos of the scene and close ups of damage to vehicles.
  • Get driver’s details
  • Get vehicle owner’s details (if not driver) 
  • Get witness contact details if possible
  • If police present, get name of the officer
  • If car owner is not present, leave a note with your contact details

CONTACT INSURANCE

  • Prepare information before ringing your insurance
    • the name, address and telephone number of all involved
    • the name of attending police officer if any
    • the date, time and place of the accident
    • insurance information of other driver
  • Contact your insurer
  • If you are not insured, the other driver’s insurance company will contact you

  • Pen and Paper (to take down details)
  • Power bank and cable for charging your phone 
  • Early Warning Device (ie witches hat or traffic cone)
  • Flouro Vest
  • Torch
  • Bottle of Water
